Seminar on the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights at Hebron University
The College of Law and Political Science in cooperation with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation organized a seminar on the possibilities and challenges facing Palestine's accession to the “Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty”. Three presentations were delivered at the seminar.Dr. Ammar Dwaik, General Director of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Human Rights, addressed the current status of death penalty in the law of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Ms. Nermin Al-Bakri, a law student at Hebron University explained the provisions of the Second Optional Protocol and the actions required by the State of Palestine onto the Protocol’s accession. Dr. Mutaz Qafisheh, Dean of the College of Law and Political Science and Associate Professor of International Law, presented a paper entitled “Change from Within: The Possibility of Abolition Death Penalty based on Islamic Jurisprudence”.
