HU Workshop Tackles Invasive Species with Smart Tech and Field Training

The College of Science and Technology at Hebron University, in collaboration with the Palestine Nature Society, organized a two-day applied scientific workshop titled: “Invasive Alien Species in Palestine: Smart Monitoring and Early Response”, held on April 15–16, 2025. The event aimed to boost efforts to protect Palestine’s environment and address the growing threat to biodiversity.

The workshop opened with remarks by Dr. Ashraf Abdeen, Dean of the College, who underscored the importance of partnerships between academia and civil society in addressing environmental challenges. Dr. Anton Khalilieh, Executive Director of the Palestine Nature Society, spoke on the dangers of invasive alien species, noting their harmful effects on biodiversity, agriculture, health, and ecosystems.

Specialized sessions included lectures by Dr. Khalilieh on “Invasive Alien Plants and Birds in Palestine” and Dr. Elias Handal on “Invasive Alien Invertebrate Species,” followed by audience discussions. Live specimens were showcased, giving participants hands-on exposure to the damage caused by these species. Strategies for early detection, control, and containment were explored.

A key milestone was the launch of the first Palestinian smart app for tracking invasive species. Available on Android and iOS, the app enables users to document and monitor the spread of such organisms, supporting smarter data collection and analysis—marking a national first.

On the second day, 65 students from the College joined a field visit to Wadi Al-Quff Nature Reserve, where they identified real invasive species and used the app to apply their training in a real-world setting—bridging theory and practice.

The workshop concluded with recommendations calling for continued collaboration between Hebron University and the Palestine Nature Society through research and awareness projects aimed at strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts.
