HU Researchers Publish Study on Radioactive Contamination in Fertilizers

Dr. Khalil Thabayneh and Ms. Hiba Hreizat from the College of Science and Technology at Hebron University published a study titled "Measurement of Radioactive Contamination of Plant Fertilizers Used in Palestine" in Nuclear Engineering and Technology, a SCOPUS-indexed journal with an impact factor of 2.6.

The research analyzed 34 fertilizer samples (8 natural, 26 synthetic) commonly used in Palestinian agriculture, measuring radioactive concentrations and the annual effective dose. The results showed that phosphate-based fertilizers contained high levels of uranium, which exceeded WHO’s reference limits in some cases.

The study found that fertilizer use contributes to soil radioactivity, potentially increasing the risk of lung cancer and other health issues. The research highlights the environmental and health concerns associated with the use of certain fertilizers.
